Jean Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer who specializes in creating haute couture and prêt-à-porter products. Moreover, Jean Paul used to be, from 2003 until 2010, the creative director of Hermes. In fact, Gaultier was the one who co-presented the popular television series “Eurotrash” along with Antoine de Caunes. Moreover, Jean-Paul Gaultier is the one who created Madonna’s infamous conical bras in 1990’s Blond Ambition tour.
The French fashion designer called Jean Paul Gaultier is still, until our days, referred to as the ‘enfant terrible’ of the French fashion world even though there is the fact that he’s not getting any younger.
Probably he’s best known to the outside world for co-presenting Channel Four’s Eurotrash program with Antoine de Caunes. But his trademark style is a humorous, eclectic challenge to the French establishment and sexual puns, sexual ambiguity in his clothing with androgynous women stalking his catwalk smoking pipes in pin-striped business suits or muscled boys modeling skirts and glittering bodysuits.
Early Career Start
Born in Paris in 1952, Gaultier started his career in 1970 when he joined the house of Pierre Cardin. From there, he went to work for Jean Patou before launching his own collection in October 1976. Moreover, he became influenced by global costumes and he frequently plunders the past, taking inspiration from eras and cultures as diverse as punk, the New Look, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the Japonsime of the nineteenth century and Marie Antoinette.
Madonna and Success
In fact, Madonna is perhaps one of his most famous fans. Their relationship was forged in the early nineties when she asked Gaultier to design the costumes for her 1990 Blonde Ambition world tour. Now a regular on the couture circuit in Paris, his clothes have gone from strength to strength making the ‘enfant terrible’ one of the most respected designers in fashion.
